Verrus Secures Westminster Contract For City Wide Roll Out of Phone Parking

Following a successful pilot in two of it's parking zones, Westminster City Council has awarded Verrus UK Ltd a five year contract to provide its cashless mobile phone payment service bringing the total number of spaces offering the service to over 7,000.

Verrus will be introducing some innovative enhancements to the service in the near future such as pre pay accounts, fleet accounts and an alternative payment method through Paypoint, aimed at motorists who do not have a credit or debit card.

The contract has been awarded under the Central London Parking In Partnership's (PiP) Framework agreement which will enable other members of the PiP consortium to take advantage of the Verrus service. Alastair Gilchrist, Director of Parking at Westminster Council believes that the PiP approach to procurement will deliver real benefits for parking authorities.

"Any local authority that joins PiP will be able to take advantage of the framework contracts saving themselves considerable time and money. Not only do they benefit from the fact that one authority has already done all the hard work in terms of tendering and evaluating services or products but also from the considerable buying power we now exert in terms of obtaining best value"

Cashless parking has been a resounding success for Westminster. Since its introduction just over a year ago, it has registered over 200,000 users and has processed over 1million transactions. The 1millionth pay-by-phone transaction was achieved in early January 2008. Rochelle Katz was the lucky recipient of three months free parking in central London and an Apple iPhone after making the milestone transaction.
Ms Katz, an interior designer from Kensington, said:
"I love using the Pay by Phone parking system because is it so convenient. There is no need to have to run back to the car to top up the meter.
"I wish there was Pay by Phone parking everywhere in London - I use it all the time. Most people have a mobile so it is the perfect way to park."
Commenting on the award, Robin Bevan, CEO for Verrus UK Ltd said "We are delighted to have won this major contract in what is arguably one of the most high profile boroughs in the country. Introducing phone payment into Westminster was a gamble for the council, especially the innovative concept of phone payment only areas, but it has paid off handsomely and we are now processing around 250,000 transactions a month for them just in the existing zones. We are looking forward to rolling out the concept across the whole of the borough and expect that other inner London authorities will be paying close attention."
